Nisa Today’s members benefit from a wide range of services including tailored store fascia packages, negotiated deals on several basic services (including phone calls, gas, electric and vehicle leasing), promotional materials and access to over 12,000 ambient and 3,000 chilled and frozen products.

One of the challenges faced by Nisa Today’s is maintaining a system for logging and tracking the huge range of own-brand products available to member stores. Storing up-to-date product specifications is vital in ensuring accurate information can be passed on to suppliers and members, especially key data such as allergy details, product warnings and ingredients. Nisa Today’s contacted Majestic seeking to improve the existing paper-based system which was difficult to index and maintain and had a low rate of new specification submissions from suppliers.

Majestic developed the Teknispex online specification tool as a solution to these challenges. The Teknispex system allows suppliers to login and complete specifications using a web interface, saving their progress at any time before completing a full validation of the specification and submitting it to Nisa Today’s. The Nisa Today’s Quality Assurance team are then able to login and view all submitted specifications and either reject them where further information is required from the supplier or accept the specification and add it to the system. Detailed searches of completed specifications can then be performed, for example to find all products which may contain nuts and pose an allergy risk.

The system has proved extremely popular with both the Quality Assurance team and with suppliers. Mat Quinn, responsible for the delivery of the Teknispex project at Nisa Today’s says “The approval and searching facilities offered by Teknispex are a massive improvement on our legacy systems, and have made a real impact on our day-to-day operations. Supplier feedback has also been very positive, with overall specification submission rates improving dramatically”.

Further expansion of the system has recently been completed to enable the specification of beers and wines and the addition of non-food specification types is planned for later this year.
